Abstract
IGLESIAS, Myriam. Land and indigenous social stratification in Cuahtinchan: (XVIxvi th century). Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2000, n.13, pp.251-281. ISSN 1668-8104.
Although the Spanish conquest of the American continent clove the history of the social organization of the indigenous communities, not all the transformations necessarily adopted the direction imposed by the Spanish authorities. This article offers an example of the latter by analysing the inter-intra-ethnic conflicts for the property of the land which took place in the sixteenth-century between the Cuauhtinchans and the Tepeacans. The confrontation was based on legal terms within the framework of the Castilian legislation. Yet the conflict was not totally grounded on ancient claims for the land property. The Spanish tribute system along with the new territorial order created for the purposes of tax recolection, were also at stake when the Cuauhtinchans and the Tepeacans confronted each other.
