Abstract

BAEZ, Monica. Research about the graphic segmentation of the text into words: Contribution to a multi-discipline insight concerning the role of investigation in the constitution of a pro-diversity culture. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2000, n.15, pp.389-406. ISSN 1668-8104.

Beginning school represents to many children an opportunity to take active part in an increasingly educated and literate culture. However, for many others it implies facing disappointment and segregation. It does not seem accidental that the highest rate of school failure and the largest number of children sent to therapy or special institutions occur during this first stage. It is then necessary to revise the paradigms that influence on the literacy process within school, as they help to determine what is "normal" and what "different". In this regard, investigation undertakes a particularly important role seeking the facts and data which will assist to find new answers and new demands, and will encourage educational and therapeutic changes. This article refers to the analysis of some of the variables considered in the Research Project (SECYT-UNR, Technology and Science Department, University of Rosario) that inquires into a specific feature of written language: the segmentation of the text into words by rural areas' children. The achievements made contribute to reviewing the relationship between oral and written language, as they evidence that children perform certain type of metalinguistic reflection frequently ignored in educational or therapeutic practices. Based on the constructivism epistemological perspective, endorsed by this Project, and the adopted research line, the non-alphabetical sides of the writing system, the mentioned achievements encourage the revision of the items that make up the facts considered to assess or predict the future possibilities for pupils undergoing the literacy learning process.
