Abstract

BARBOZA, M.C.; MENDONCA, O.J.  and  BORDACH, M.A.. Men and women of Las Pirguas, Salta: Study of Dimorphic Expressions. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2007, n.32, pp.65-71. ISSN 1668-8104.

The goal of this paper is to provide information on the expression of morphologic variables of sex in the adult individuals of Las Pirguas, an osteological collection presently kept in the Museo de La Plata. Due to poor curation conditions, this collection, originally formed and preserved with good skeletal association and integrity, is present day at a total disorder both articular and contextual. Taking into account this limited information, we decided to analyze separately conventionally diagnostic anatomic structures such as pelvises and skulls, in order to visualize and define the degree of observed dimorphism both at intra and inter anatomic complex considered. Results show that there is a low general dimorphic expression in the individuals of Las Pirguas. However, pelvises remain more dimorphic than skulls. We analize, discuss and interpret these results according to the information available for other skeletal collections from NW Argentina, that proved to be highly dimorphic.

Keywords : Human osteology; Las Pirguas; NW Argentina; Sexual dimorphism.
