Abstract

CHALABE, P.A.  and  ALDERETE, Ethel. Tobacco farm workers in the province of Jujuy: sociodemographic characteristics and pesticide exposure. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2009, n.37, pp.97-111. ISSN 1668-8104.

This descriptive study examines through structured interviews the sociodemographic and labor conditions of tobacco farm-workers in the Department El Carmen, Province of Jujuy, Argentina (N=100). The majority of workers setting up tobacco leafs for drying are women (95.6%) while men work in harvesting (87.3%), fumigation (65.5%), removing weeds (58.2%) and planting seedlings (52.7%); 12% started working before 14 years of age; 10% are Bolivian; 58% work during 3 months in tobacco farming and only 14% work year round in this occupation; 62% thought that pesticides produce health harm; 33% had symptoms compatible with intoxication with pesticides and of these, only 36.3% received medical care.
