Abstract

GOLOVANEVSKY, Laura. (Privatization and railway dismantling in Jujuy. An approach to its effects based on a counterfact methodology. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2012, n.41, pp.117-143. ISSN 1668-8104.

This article intends to make an approach to the effects of railways dismantling in Jujuy, putting this process in its historical development and analysing its impact, particularly in relation to transportation of goods. Social saving methodology is used, based on a counterfact approach. Primary data is used, which was obtained in railway files, and secondary data  was achieved through bibliographical search. This work is part of a bigger research, which initial hypothesis postulates that the privatization and dismantling process of the 1990's counts for most of the negative socioeconomic effects related to the virtual disappearance of railway in Jujuy. The information revealed by the initial research showed some results different from what was expected: privatization in the 1990´s was the final part of a long deterioration process, which had an inflexion point in the 1960´s, but which had also started even earlier. In this context, the quantitative approach made in the article shows that, despite the deterioration process and the bad conditions in which the service is carried out, railway transportation for goods could still mean a significant saving in terms of product in relation to transportation by road.
