Abstract

MASSOBRIO, Micaela  and  VIZIOLI, Nicolás Alejandro. Anxiety and sleep quality in general population and health workers in a pandemic situation. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2021, n.60, pp.269-290. ISSN 1668-8104.

Being an unprecedented stressful situation, the COVID-19 pandemic may make people more likely to experience anxiety or sleep disturbances. The present investigation evaluated anxiety and sleep quality in 222 general population participants (ages 18 to 63; M = 32.87; SD = 9.53) and 132 health workers (ages 22 to 65; M = 34.74; SD = 9.76) of the City of Buenos Aires and the Greater Buenos Aires, in a pandemic situation, with the objectives of a) investigating the existence of significant differences in anxiety and sleep quality among the population general and health workers; b) analyze the existence of associations between anxiety and sleep quality in samples of the general population and of health workers; and c) study the relationship between the sociodemographic variables gender, place of residence, work modality, age group and level of education, and the variables anxiety and sleep quality, both in the general population sample and in that of health professionals. The administration of instruments was carried out online. When making a comparison using the Mann Whitney's U, no significant differences were found in anxiety or sleep quality between both samples. By calculating Pearson's r statistic, it was found that the magnitude of the association between anxiety and sleep quality was greater in the general population. When analyzing the relationship between the sociodemographic variables gender, place of residence, work modality, age group and level of education with the variables anxiety and quality of sleep, through a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) significant effects were found for the gender and the level of education in the general population, and in the work modality in health workers. The results are discussed in relation to previous research and its implications
