Abstract

COGLIATTI, M; CORTIZO, L.V  and  ROGERS, W.J. Mejoramiento genético de alpiste: selección y evaluación de líneas de derivadas de la población marroquí PI284184. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.2, pp.189-195. ISSN 1669-2314.

Argentina has a long history in the production and marketing of canaryseed (Phalaris canariensis L.) and lies amongst the three major producing countries. However, little has been invested in the genetic improvement of the species, which is evident from the lack of national commercial cultivars. In this regard, the seed sown is a population consisting of a mixture of introduced populations that originally could be adequately differentiated. With the aim of promoting the development of commercial cultivars of canaryseed, in years 2004, 2005 and 2006, available genetic variability in the species was assessed from a germplasm collection consisting of populations and cultivars originating from different parts of the world; from these trials, a Moroccan population was identified, called PI 284184, that exhibited adequate agronomic performance. In the current paper, the process of selection of inbred lines derived from the Moroccan population PI 284184 is described, and the results are presented of the evaluation of seven of the lines selected for their high thousand grain weight (S4201, S4202, S4203, S4204, S4206, S4207 and S4208) and three reference cultivars of worldwide distribution ("Alden", "Cantate" and "CDC Maria"), performed in years 2011 and 2012, in Azul, Province of Buenos Aires. The characters measured were grain yield, thousand kernel weight, number of grains per square meter and plant height. As a result, agronomic superiority was observed for the three characters measured of six of the selected lines (S4201, S4202, S4203, S4204, S4206 and S4207), compared to the reference cultivars. In addition, three lines were identified (S4201, S4202 and S4203) that stood out by exhibiting a thousand grain weight ≥ 9 g, grain yield ≥1889 kg/ha and height ≤ 111 cm. In the future, we plan to evaluate the selected lines in different environments, in order to confirm their stability and complete their characterization, assessing other aspects such as phenology, susceptibility to lodging and harvest index.
