Abstract

BAZZIGALUPI, O  and  BERTIN, O.D. Fertilización nitrogenada en Festuca arundinacea Schreb. para producción de semilla con riego en el norte de Buenos Aires, Argentina. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.3, pp.290-295. ISSN 1669-2314.

Tall fescue is the perennial forage species most used in the humid Pampa and, also, the species with the highest certified seed production in Argentina. Because of the recommended N fertilization does not rely on objective diagnostic tools, loss of profitability and increasing risks of environmental damage would be evident. An experiment was conducted during two years, to evaluate the effects of N dose (0 - control-, 75, 150, 225 and 300 kg.ha-1) and the form of fertilizer application (complete or split) on the yield and quality of tall fescue seed (cv Lujan INTA). The experiment was established on April 4th of 2010 on a typical Argiudol soil. Plant growth regulator and fungicide were applied at standard doses as well as 100 mm.year-1 of supplementary irrigation. The harvest was done by hand when seed had 48-49% of moisture. A complete randomized block design (r=4) was used, with a factorial arrangement of the treatments. The data were statistical analyzed by the ANOVA Procedure of SAS and treatments means were compared with the LSD test (α= 5%). The relationship between seed yield and N doses was analyzed by computing the parameters estimates with the NLI N procedure of SAS. N doses significantly affected the number of panicles, the weight of 1,000 seeds, the germination percentage and the seed yield. The yield response to N doses was adjusted to a “linear plateau” model (y = 643. 5 + 10. 36 X - 0.063 X2; p < 0.001), with values of 82.3 kg N.ha-1 and 1,070 kg seed.ha-1 for the inflection point. The optimal economic dose was 73 kg N ha-1 . With the technology used in this experiment, without N fertilization, yield was approximately 600 kg ha-1 of pure seed. With N fertilization, seed yield increased by 66%. According to the historical price relationship between seed and N fertilizer, the N fertilization in tall fescue for seed production is a profitable agronomic practice.
