Abstract

Cultivation of grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) for wine production showed an important growth in Argentinean North Patagonia, in last years. Within this region, Viedma Valley in Río Negro Province (lat. 40° 48’ S; long. 63° 05’ W) has become a new area for wine production devoted to both domestic and external market. The aim of this study was to determine agro climatic competence of this zone, in order to fulfill wine grapes bioclimatic demands. Weather records of Low Valley Agrarian Experimental Station INTA-RN (1965-2011) and phenological data by Baggiolini method (2004-2011) of six grapevine cultivars (Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon) were used. There were analized winter chill requirements, spring frost damage by Pascale and Damario’s frost risk index -FRI-, Winkler thermal integral, Branas heliothermal product, Huglin Index and Tonietto night coolness index, as well as Branas et al. hydrothermal index for cryptogamic diseases risk. Results showed that the regional climate meets grapevine requirements in terms of winter chill, and thermal and helio thermal conditions (Zone III, IH > 6, and IH4: warm temperate, with cold to very cold nights, in Winkler, Branas, Huglin and Tonietto classifications respectively). The local climate also showed a moderate risk to cryptogramic diseases. Frost risk index showed a high risk of spring frost. To achieve an economically feasible wine grape production, it would be necessary to provide the installation of active frost control systems in the zone.
