Abiotic and biotic stresses affect several crops and cause huge economical losses. In recent years several strategies have been developed to obtain plants tolerant to abiotic stress. Such strategies include biotechnological approaches as well as classical breeding. We decided to evaluate the possibility of generating enhanced tolerance to water stress using a management approach that takes into account the ability of some plants to increase tolerance to a specific stress if previous generations were exposed to it. Potato plants, in which the previous generation was subjected to drought stress, show changes in stomata conductance and photosystem II integrity that are associated with a lower impact on yield reduction, compared to plants that were not exposed to drought before. This “memory” effect would allow the development of potato plants with greater tolerance to water stress without genetic modifications.
