Abstract

FERNANDEZ, D.A. Elaboración y aplicación de un índice de precios de insumos agrícolas. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2018, vol.44, n.3, pp.384-397. ISSN 1669-2314.

The article exposes a methodology for the construction of an ‘Agricultural Input Price Index’ (IPIA). The argentine statistical system does not generate an indicator of this characteristics, and its equals in other grainproducing countries don’t suffer this limitation. Following internationally recommended methods for price indices construction, we propose a weight structure for the different items involved (fuel, seeds, fertilizers and pesticides), as well as the information sources from which nourishes, the criteria for updating the input basket and other adjustment mechanisms. The IPIA can have multiple applications, both for academic research on the agricultural sector and for decision making at the microeconomic level or on public policy related to the activity. Once the indicator is computed, the ratio CPI/IPIA is constructed, in order to analyze the evolution of a differentiation mechanism of agricultural firms studied by Miguel Peretti in the late 1990s. This alludes to the fact that the change in relative prices has a different impact depending on which type of producer is the recipient of the new framework (large-scale enterprises, family farmers), given that the propensity to use surpluses in the purchase of consumer goods varies substantially between them.
