Abstract

VIGNOLIO, Osvaldo  and  PETIGROSSO, L.R.. Lotus tenuis (Waldst. et Kit), estudio para un manejo con múltiples propósitos. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2020, vol.46, n.3, pp.329-338. ISSN 1669-2314.

The use of crops with multiple purposes is an option that allows obtaining of the same production system different ecosystem services. In this work, the use of Lotus tenius with multiple purposes was explored under field conditions, this is, the seed production, forage and flowering as source of Apis mallifera. Lotus tenuis cultivar “Chajá” was sown in plots of 3.00 x 1.25 m with 8 rows separated by 17.50 cm. The sowing was carried out on April 27, 2015. Two cutting moments were applied, at the beginning of flowering (IF) with 994.10 ± 154.10 umbels with flowers/m² and 909.13 ± 196.13 umbels with pods/m², and in advanced flowering (AF), with 229.33 ± 82.79 umbels with flowers/m² and 1729.50 ± 728.08 umbels with mature pods/m². The number of repetitions was 5 and 3 for IF and AF, respectively. There were no plots without cutting. Lotus tenuis plant density determined by thinning was 17 pl/m². The flower and pod dynamics varied in each cutting moment. Two peaks of flowering and pods were recorded. The combination of both cuts allowed prolonging the flowering in the time, which is relevant for bee production. Thousand seed weigh and germination power were not affected by the cutting. Therefore, the seedling vigor would not be compromised. The results allow us to consider different management alternatives for L. tenuis crops as multiple purposes. In the IF case, forage was obtained in the cut (182.16 g MS/m²) and seeds in the harvest (66.51 g MS/m²). In the AF case, it is possible to consider two options, forage in the cut (322.33 g MS/m²) and seed in the harvest (48.15 g MS/m²). On the other hand, if we are only interested in seed production, it is possible to obtain those of the cut (40.92 g MS/m²) and of the harvest, a total of 89.07 g MS/m². The options are related to the plant phenotypic plasticity and indeterminate vegetative and reproductive growth of L. tenuis. Future works should be done under grazing conditions and to adjust management decisions to maximize the different ecosystem services provided by the species.
