Abstract

COPPOLA, Javier; PESCIO, F.  and  SCHAMBER, P.. Análisis de manejo de residuos sólidos urbanos y elaboración de aboneras para huertas traspatio en San Andrés de Giles (Bs. As.). RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2022, vol.48, n.1, pp.90-99.  Epub Apr 06, 2022. ISSN 1669-2314.

One of the major environmental issues in Argentina is given by the problems associated with an inadequate management of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). In most cases, the recollection of the different fractions occurs in an undifferentiated way and sanitary landfill is used as a final disposal method, with environmental and economic issues that it entails. This work addressed a specific experience in the management of MSW, within the framework of the municipal pilot program for the differentiated recollection of MSW in San Andrés de Giles City (Buenos Aires). The research focused on the strategies for separation of MSW and the management of their organic fraction, taken from a representative sample of households. In addition, the develp of backyard gardening was linked with composting practice. Among the results, it stands out that although the participation in Recolection Programs is low -it´s voluntary-, around half of the respondents carried out separation of MSW and a slightly lower percentage composted and cultivated backyard gardens. Among the major drawbacks, deficient access to information still stands out. This indicates that public actions for the integral management of MSW such as the Municipal Program, or the realization of backyard gardens with compost bins associated with environmental education, can be tools with high local impact that can improve the quality of life in cities.
