Abstract

This article examines the sequence of arguments put forward by Arendt in the sec ond part of The Life of the Mind aimed at making it known that the will is the creative spiritual faculty of the person who can be held responsible for his actions and his being. First, Arendtian ideas about the complexities of the will are examined as a faculty crossed by paradoxes and controversies. Then the links discovered by Arendt between will and responsibility are made explicit. Finally, the concept of natality as an alternative of assumption of the paradoxical responsibility is investigated.
