Abstract

CHICOTE POMPANIN, María Teresa. Mantua in the Quattrocento: Urban development, the materialization of power and the Gonzagas. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

During the Quattrocento, the Gonzaga family had to legitimate and materialize its recently acquired power. The most important ways in which the princes of Mantua were known outside their own country were political relations, international councils and works of art. This paper will discuss two specific ways they used to manifest power: urban development and public ceremonies. In order to do so, documentary and visual sources will be used, all of which will be analyzed in light of recent studies on this city during the Renaissance.

Keywords : Mantua; Gonzaga; Quattrocento; Power; Ceremony.
