Abstract

TRUCHUELO GARCIA, Susana. Territorial government in war times: provincial oligarchies mediation within the Habsbourg Spanish Monarchy. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

Territorial government in Old Regime European monarchies was greatly supported on provincial elite groups that constituted the monarchies' branches to control this environment. This research deals with the analysis of power relationships established between the Monarchy and provincial oligarchies in the Basque Country, in the Northern Spanish frontier during the Thirty Years War; particularly during the times of the French invasion of Castilian territories in 1638. In these complicated war circumstances, what was a need to make easy the overcoming of so harsh circumstances was the role played by provincial oligarchies patrons located in the Court and connected with the local arena of the Basque territories one another by kinship, friendship and patronage links established in the both sides of power and influence, the Court and the provincial sphere.

Keywords : Habsburg Spanish Monarchy; Basque Country; Clientage and patronage; Absolutism; Thirty Years War; Territorial government.
