Abstract

FIGUEROA, Marcelo Fabián. Territorial surveying and travel instructions: the Malaspina expedition, the helmsman José de la Peña and Eastern Patagonian coast,1789-1790). Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2016, vol.15, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

This paper focuses on the geographical surveying of the Eastern Patagonian coast which was developed by the Malaspina expedition at the end of 1789. Especially, it studies the travel instructions issued by Malaspina in order to guide the territorial inspection developed by José de la Peña, a Río de la Plata's helmsman. The paper supports the argument that data collected by De la Peña were used by Malaspina in order to write his reports devoted to the Patagonian territories in the framework of the reform of the Spanish colonial empire.
