Abstract

CARPENTIER, Bastien. The making of hybrid identities: Armada's officers and the construction of clientelistic networks between Madrid and Genoa in the XVIth century. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

In this article, we question the informal roles of the officers of the galleys fleets in the Mediterranean area during the reign of Philip II. To this end, we reduce the analysis scale on the city of Genoa, wherethe admiral resided and where a squadron of galleys in the service of the king anchored. The concentration of human, material and financial resources in the town generated economic and social dynamics that the king wished to cultivate and capitalize by means of his agents. Further the explanation of purely administrative and warlike roles, it is a question of understanding the stakes of the political role that the king entrusted to them.

Keywords : Genoa; Giovanni Andrea Doria; Admiral; Hispanic Monarchy; Galleys Privateers.
