Abstract

SALVARREY, Teo. Cinema and Memory: Algerian War Representations in French and Algerian Cinema in the 60s. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2021, vol.20, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

The following article aims at analyzing the cinematographic representations made about the Algerian War in the 1960s, both in French and Algerian cinema. We believe that, due to its intervention in collective memory, cinema is a historical source which presents traces of society and its constitution as an agent of History. Therefore, we will analyze trauma and amnesia - as memory´s counterface - as well as omissions of the Algerian War in French cinema. By doing so, we attempt to track elements that have affected the social structure of the French mindset. At the same time, we will assess the experience of colonization and the Algerian War of Independence shown in Algerian cinema as the basis for the construction of the foundational myth of the new Nation-State, which constitutes a parallel history to the Colonial History and which, at the same time, creates a new official history that legitimizes the new state.

Keywords : Algeria; France; Decolonization; Cinema; Memory.
