Abstract

CONTI, Romina. Art And Technology In Marcusean Analyses Of Social Rationality. Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2017, vol.12, n.36, pp.185-204. ISSN 1850-0013.

This paper proposes understanding Marcuse's theory on art and technology as a part of his theory of social rationality. Within this framework, the logics of art and technology appear as opposite ways of configuring that rationality, as well as a means of domination or emancipation, respectively. While the technological logic gives room to a loss of the power of negation and tothe Marcusean theory of one-dimensional man, the esthetic experience connected through art restores a wider rationality that, by including the order of sensibility, enables social change.

Keywords : Technology; Art; Rationality.
