A growing internationalization of scientific activities can be observed in the current context of the production of knowledge. These are also increasingly carried out using international and innovation-oriented networks and research that transcend territorial borders in terms of financing, supplies and results. This paper presents a comparative review of the instruments implemented to measure the internationalization process in science. Its focus is limited to the aspects that are related to university systems, a relevant party in the production of knowledge at the national level. The methodology applied is the documentary analysis of three types of instruments: those created to evaluate scientific production in general and the internationalization of science at a national level; the instruments created by international entities to evaluate the internationalization of higher education, centered on matters pertinent to scientific-technological activities; and the aspects considered in the study on the activities of the internationalization of higher education and international cooperation of the Argentine network CIUN-CIN (Network for the International Cooperation of National Universities of the National Inter-University Council). The results point towards a greater regional interest in the role of the universities in the internationalization of science.
