LIMA, Roberto Kant de. Anthropology, Law and Criminal Justice: an heterodox combination. Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2013, n.37, pp.43-57. ISSN 1850-275X.

Academic relationships between Law and Anthropology will be discussed in both theoretical and empirical basis, having as main support the institutionalization process of creating a pioneer criminal justice undergraduate course at the Universidade Federal Fluminense, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Theoretical questions related to Western legal models for social control and administration of conflicts grounded on the author's ethnographic experience in Brazil and USA will be also discussed. Finally, comments will be made on the characteristics of criminal justice in Brazil and on recent changes in public policies on criminal justice and policing strategies in Rio de Janeiro city.

Keywords : Legal Anthropology; Comparative method; Criminal justice; Brazilian police.
