Abstract

WIKMAN, Marie Ørum. The construction of a juridical truth about a dangerous "other" in a case of police violence from the urban area of Buenos Aires. Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2013, n.38, pp.33-55. ISSN 1850-275X.

This article aims to shed light on the concrete ways in which "the juridical truth" is constructed in cases of police violence. The construction of the juridical truth is considered as a process that occurs in the interplay between representation, power and narratives. Through an analysis of documents and testimonies from a specific penal case, the aim is to show how stigmatizing discourses about young men from the poor sectors of society operate through the interventions of the tribunal. It is argued that the penal system, guaranteeing a high degree of impunity in cases of police violence, constitutes one of the mechanisms that enable that very same violence.

Keywords : Police violence; Juridical response; Poverty; Stigmatization; Discrimination.
