Abstract

FIGUEIRO, Pablo. “Earning by stealing”. An approach to the meanings of work, money and life through criminal practices. Cuad. antropol. soc. [online]. 2020, n.51, pp.207-228. ISSN 1850-275X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/cas.i51.6932.

Through a series of interviews with people deprived of their freedom for committing crimes against property and third parties, this article accounts for notions about work, life and money at various stages of these people’s life trajectories. In order to do so, the paper examines three cases, presented in-depth, to develop the specific contexts that explain the emergence of an idea of work that can shed light on the more general conceptions and experiences of what it is considered a decent life. In this sense, understanding work from the point of view of those who have committed crimes against property gives us privileged insight into the reality of work as it is presented to the participants, but that is not exclusive to them.

Keywords : Work; Crime; Decent life; Money; Consumption.
