Abstract

VILLAFANE, Alicia G.. Las formas familiares de producción en el agro, características y persistencia en el contexto local: El caso de la pampa bonaerense. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2000, n.1, pp.87-101. ISSN 1850-373X.

This paper examines the changes, which occur at the level of family forms of production in the Pampa region (Argentina). The objective is to describe the heterogeneity of situations that family farms experience at the moment. These situations, as well as certain features or characteristics of individual farmers, have contributed to the persistence of family farms in the complex globalized context. In order to achieve this objective, first focusing on economic adjustments affecting the global economy in the last decade, the paper examines the impact in the agricultural sector. Next, it is described the diversity of situations which agrarian family farms find themselves in the local context. The farms are categorized according to the way that organized the different production factors and follow diverse strategies. In this analysis we find that far from what is supposed, the "family logic" in the management of the farm is not associated to the size of them. Also, we describe the emergence of "new social actors" in rural context. This study was carried out through the use of quantitative and qualitative techniques. In 1989-1990 we carried out a structured survey in a random sample of 65 farms, while in the following years, 1990-1999 we followed the trajectory of the farms, of the producers and their families using open-ended interviews and participant observation. The paper concludes by examining which farmers are surviving the changes brought about by globalization and why.
