Abstract

GIARDINA, Miguel A.. Economic anatomy of Rheidae. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2006, n.7, pp.263-276. ISSN 1850-373X.

In this paper, the Economic Indexes for Rheidae (Class Aves), which include the calculation of the Modified General Utility Index (MGUI) and its component indexes, Meat Utility Index (MUI), Marrow Index (MI), White Grease Index (WGI) and General Utility Index (GUI), are presented. Moreover, the methodology implemented for obtaining each index and the discussion of the results in an archeofaunistic setting are also presented. The results obtained show net values of meat performance associated with the anatomical portions belonging to the appendicular skeleton, as well as a high grease index in the axial portions (mainly pelvic girdle and sternum), and a high marrow index in tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus. Finally, the correlation that exists between the Economic Utility Index and the Structural Bone Density Index is analyzed, showing a problem of equifinality.

Keywords : Zooarchaeology; Economic anatomy; South American Ratites; Rheidae.
