Abstract

BORELLA, Florencia  and  MUNOZ, Sebastián. Taphonomic observations on pinniped bones on the northern coast of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina). Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2006, n.7, pp.399-403. ISSN 1850-373X.

In this note, taphonomic observations made during 1993 and 1995 on the northern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego are presented. Transects were made on the beaches of the mouth of the Cullen river and San Sebastián bay in order to gather information on the properties of natural accumulations of pinniped bones on coastal areas of varying accumulation potential. These data suggest that the surveyed bone assemblages represent different accumulation rhythms. In the case of Cullen, the contribution of bones through time was fairly constant, while at San Sebastián the main body of remains consists of carcasses of animals that died simultaneously.

Keywords : Pinnipeds; Taphonomy; Atlantic coast; Tierra del Fuego.
