Abstract
BALZANO, Silvia. When the disciplines of the «norm» legitimize (norm)ality: on good and bad behavior in Montes de Oca Colony, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2007, n.8, pp.339-353. ISSN 1850-373X.
Emic constructions of the reasons for institutionalization and continued residency of a group of patients at the Manuel Montes de Oca Colony are analyzed. Created according to the most advanced European theories in psychiatry, the Montes de Oca Colony maintains a traditional custodial model of care which works against community treatment and expected integration. In addition, this custodial model not only becomes embedded in everyday patient-physician interaction, but also has a strong impact on the way residents perceive and construct their own life-histories.
