Abstract

DE JONG, Ingrid  and  RATTO, Silvia. Political Networks In The Arauco-Pampean Area: Calfucurá´S Indigenous Confederation (1830-1870). Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2008, n.9, pp.241-260. ISSN 1850-373X.

There is a widespread view in Argentinean historiography that the cacique Calfucurá organized a powerful and stable "Indigenous Confederation" that threatened and prevented the expansion of the Nation to its "natural" limits over several decades. The aim of this paper is to re-interpret the confederation, analyzing the different moments at which Calfucurá succeeded in mobilizing allied groups, and taking into consideration the reach and limits of these alliances and the interethnic political context in which they were made. Therefore, it is necessary to differentiate the Confederation of indigenous forces which could be mobilized on certain occasions from the Cacicazgo of Calfucurá, the leadership by the cacique of his own people. As such, we present both a reconstruction of Calfucurá's management and an analysis of the evolution of relations between the indigenous groups and the Creole governments in order to identify the junctures and conditions under which Calfucurá's leadership increased or decreased.

Keywords : Calfucurá; Interethnic relations; Buenos Aires frontier.
