Geoarchaeological and chronological information is used to discuss the role of Middle Holocene volcanism in the depopulation of southern Mendoza, Argentina. Types and grades of impact of volcanic activity are defined in order to establish environmental recuperation periods and to infer the effects of such activity on human societies during the Late Holocene.
