Abstract
CASTRO, Juan Carlos. Archaeology in el Palmar National Park: availability and exploitation of lithic raw materials. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.145-161. ISSN 1850-373X.
This paper presents the results of intensive surveys conducted in El Palmar National Park, Colón, Entre Ríos province. No prior systematic archaeological work had been done in the area covered by the research. As a result of the surveys, seven sites and thirteen isolated archaeological finds, all in a superficial position, were detected. All of the assemblages are composed of lithic materials; five included pottery, while none registered archaeofaunal remains. This article summarizes the results of the analysis of the materials collected in order to produce an initial characterization of the technology. The functionality of the sites is discussed, as well as a preliminary outline of spatial occupation in the study area. It is proposed that the sites correspond to late Holocene multi-activity camps and workshops. The remains are evidence of the human occupation of levees, beaches and dunes, as well as the predominant exploitation of siliceous river gravel.
