Forthis paper a data file was compiled made up of several variables that can be used when characterizing a source of lithic raw material. While using examples from the Pampas, the proposed methodology can be used in other regions of the landscape. One of the main goals of this paper is to provide a set of variables to standardize the characterization of lithic sources. This is essential for comparisons, either among data generated by a single researcher, or with data shared among colleagues. Moreover, adequate characterization allows ranking or selection of those sites most likely to have been exploited. This can guide the search for associations between the raw materials recovered in the archaeological record and the sources through thin sections and/or chemical analysis.
