Abstract
FLEGENHEIMER, Nora; MAZZIA, Natalia and BABOT, María del Pilar. Estudios de detalle sobre una piedra discoidal pampeana. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.499-505. ISSN 1850-373X.
Discoidal stones are extraordinary objects forming part of some lithic assemblages assigned to the final Pleistocene/early Holocene. In this paper we introduce a decorated discoidal stone recovered along with other pecked and ground stone tools from Cerro El Sombrero Cima (Tandilia, Buenos Aires , Argentina). Apart from its description, the results of studies performed on this specimen are presented: fatty acids analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and microfossil analysis using an optical microscope. No concluding evidence about the possible use of this discoidal stone have been obtained, but it was not an artifact used for processing or containing. Yet, as this object is the oldest portable art known for the region we consider it to represent in itself a challenge to understanding past symbolic worlds.
