Abstract
GASCO, Alejandra; MARSH, Erik and KENT, Jonathan. Clarificando variables osteométricas para la primera falange de camélidos sudamericanos. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.131-138. ISSN 1850-373X.
Osteometry, combined with statistical analyses, is an effective means of differentiating South American camelid species. Different measurement protocols for the first phalange are synthesized and compared in this paper. Discrepant and equivalent measurements from different protocols are clarifiedin order to improve the methodology. Confusion between measurements means comparisons between published data from different investigations remain difficult and tenuous. Correcting this situation may lead to more widespread and shared use of raw data based on standardized measurements. This is a simple and straightforward means of making better use of the few postcranial metric data available for camelids in the Andes. It should lead to more reliable interpretations in osteometric studies, which will then be able to take into account the variability in modern camelid species and morphotypes, as well as those potentially present in archaeological contexts.
