Abstract

GALARZA, Bárbara. Segregación y dispersión en la atención del derecho a la salud mental en el centro de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.1, pp.69-83. ISSN 1850-373X.

This paper examines transformations in the field of mental health in a locality of the Pampeana region, Argentina, during the first decade of the 21st century. The main axis of analysis is the socio-spatial construction of this field at the local level in the context of the incipient privatization of services. The aim of the paper is to examine local policy from the point of view of the daily activities of actors and the symbolic configuration giving meaning to their actions within the framework of health care provided to citizens identified as psychiatric professionals and patients. The socio-spatial distribution of the mental health service is thus considered as a constitutive element of local policy. Analysis focuses on both the territorial and symbolic-ideological dimension of urban space. In this framework, the population of patients and professionals are subject to a policy of segregation, even though their right to an integrated therapeutic approach has been recognized by law since 2010 at a national level. The territorial dispersion of the population observed corresponds with a process of symbolic-ideological and politicalinstitutional segregation that contradicts what has been legally established for mental patients in recent years.
