Abstract

APOLINAIRE, Eduardo; BASTOURRE, Laura  and  COSTA ANGRIZANI, Rodrigo. Arqueología de las tierras altas de Entre Ríos: primeros resultados de las prospecciones en el interior del departamento Gualeguay. Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.91-107. ISSN 1850-373X.

Since the beginning of systematic archaeological research in Northeastern Argentina, the continental plains of Entre Ríos Province has been under explored. In order to reverse this situation, systematic archaeological research in Gualeguay department began in 2012. The preliminary results of the archaeological surveys and of the analysis of the collected materials are presented. The fieldwork design was carried out following the major geomorphological units and was aimed to assess the variability and spatial distribution of the archaeological record. Sixteen archaeological sites were identified, most of which are located on the alluvial plains of the Gualeguay River. The potsherd is the most ubiquitous material in the study area and there are evidences of its manufacture in several sites. The archaeofaunal assemblage is characterized by the predominance of cervids. Open grasslands species such as Ozotoceros bezoarticus and Rhea sp. are present. The majority of lithic artifacts were manufactured on sandstone, chalcedony, and silicified limestone. The presence of local lithic raw material as well as long and medium distance rocks is assessed in order to discuss lithic procurement and its relationship with human mobility and social interaction networks.

Keywords : Archaeological survey; Continental plains of Entre Ríos; Gualeguay River; Hunter-gatherer societies.
