Abstract

Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2016, vol.17, suppl.1, pp.7-21. ISSN 1850-373X.

The earthen mound structures, known in the Plata Basin as "cerritos", are the most common and characteristic architectural structures register during the Holocene. At the region of the upper Delta of the Paraná River, the presence of these structures has been recognized by different authors since the late nineteenth century and since then it has been discussed whether humans have taken part in building thereof. Recently, we have studied the upper Delta of the Parana River from a geoarchaeological perspective, which has allowed us to recognize in the genesis and evolution of the mounds, different constructive cultural strategies. In this paper, we advance on the exploitation of sedimentary/ pedological resource at regional level. We applied different sedimentological and chemical qualitative techniques to samples of natural and anthropic horizons, ceramic fragments and experimental samples obtained by us from different localities in the mentioned area, including "Cerros Boari" locality (left bank of the Gualeguaychú river-Entre Ríos). The results allow us to recognize that sedimentary/pedological resources used by moundbuilders were modified in their texture to include for example ceramic fragments. Furthermore, we observed differences between anthropogenic and natural deposits in what regards the mineral and geochemical composition of them. This kind of differences, allow us to infer the existence of diverse selective strategies and manipulation of sedimentary/pedological resource by moundbuilders.
