“Pueblo Ranquel” is a new settlement of Rankülches indigenous families founded in 2009 in the province of San Luis. The settlement is the result of a planning process led by the provincial government during the first decade of this century which included the transfer of thousands of hectares of land and the construction of infrastructure for communities who identified ethnically as Rankülches. The structures, made up of 24 houses, a school and a hospital, are characterized by reproducing the old shelter format, arranged - moreover - in a circular plan. This quality of design, as well as the uses, meanings and practices developed by the inhabitants, can be considered as part of a patrimonialisation process that combines components of the present related to a surrounding archaeological landscape. The aim of this paper is to analyze the construction of Ranquel Pueblo as part of a policy of recognition and reparation towards indigenous peoples and discuss both the actors involved and the ways territorial and identity re-creation and reappropriation by settlers occurs in this new context.
