Abstract

RAMUNDO, Paola Silvia  and  MALKEVICIUS, María Victoria. REPERTOIRE OF CERAMIC DESIGNS AND SHAPES FROM THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS OF LA CUEVA GORGE (HUMAHUACA, JUJUY, ARGENTINA). Comechingonia [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.1, pp.11-20. ISSN 1851-0027.

The following article analyzes the decorative designs and shapes observed in the pottery collections of La Cueva gorge, Humahuaca, Jujuy province (Argentina), with the objective of contextualizing them on a regional level. These sets of items were collected by Muniz Barreto, Casanova, Medenica and Basílico. Muniz Barreto recovered materials from Pukara de La Cueva and Pueblo Viejo de La Cueva; the Casanova collection includes archeological vessels from the mentioned sites and from Pueblo Viejo del Morado; Basílico extracted material exclusively from Pueblo Viejo de La Cueva, while the Medenica collection is formed by pottery from the gorge in general, without specifications about their sites of origin. The analysis carried out also allows to evaluate some social processes, such as the interaction between different sectors of this area of the Northwestern region of Argentina, as well as the possibility of identifying -through ceramic remains- a unique social identity in the La Cueva gorge.

Keywords : Pottery; decorative design shapes collections; La Cueva gorge.
