Abstract

DAGFAL, Alejandro. War and Peace: the first debates on the practice of psychotherapies in Argentina (1959-1962). Anu. investig. [online]. 2006, vol.13, pp.127-135. ISSN 1851-1686.

At the end of the fifties, the emergence of psychology as a profession provoked several conflicts with the field of psychiatry, concerning the clinical training of psychologists and their aspiration to practice psychotherapy. From 1959 on, the position of many psychiatrists was inflexible, promoting the prohibition of any clinical practice carried out by anyone not having a medical degree. This made sense in the context of the crisis of this medical specialty, whose institutional organisation was very recent. Nevertheless, by 1962, this situation would change, and the discussions would begin to focus on the subtleties of the definition of psychologist's role. He would no longer be an "intruder" in the clinical domain, but a "helpful collaborator". In this paper we try to recreate the terms of these debates, identifying the conflicting parties as well as their discursive productions.
