We present a systematic survey of childhood institutions in Argentina that shows the passage of those considered total to open and religious to secular. Be part of the Viceroyalty period where attention to abandoned children occurs through asylums and orphanages run by religious orders and the Cabildo. In the period of independence, secular criteria are strengthened at Welfare associations emerge. In the period of National Organization (Conservative), the great immigration prioritizes childhood problem creating total institutions lay under medical supervision. Surge the Board of the Children. In enlarged democracy (1916-1930), psychological criteria prevail prospective and specialized treatment in institutions open to mental health treatment of childhood psychopathology; given early childhood neuropsychiatric criteria that shape children's mental health. Only in the 1930s was institutionalized child mental hygiene school and psychopathology in terms of clinics and hospitals, made ​​its way to the formalization of differential education. Thus emerging open institutions concerned with educational and vocational areas, emerging specialty educational guidance.
