Abstract

VICENTE DA SILVA, Andreia. Avá [online]. 2017, n.30, pp.15-36. ISSN 1851-1694.

From the middle of the twentieth century there was a great growth of the productions of the European social sciences, especially French ones, regarding the experience of the death. In these productions there is a tendency to work on the theme from the composition of pairs of opposition between the traditional expression of peaceful and natural coexistence with dying and the contemporary model characterized by the interdiction and remission of death and the dead. In this bibliographical article, I follow the formation of this field of debates in France between the years of 1949 to 1985 presenting some of the theories and explanatory methodologies that support the arguments of the authors of the time. Next, I present examples of studies from the last quarter of the twentieth century that show the unfolding of the French case for the analysis of death rites.

Keywords : Death; Ritual; Coexistence; Desritualization; Removal.
