Abstract
MAGALLANES, Julieta. PROCESOS PATRIMONIALIZADORES Y PUEBLOS INDÍGENAS: LUCHAS SOCIALES POR LA IDENTIDAD Y LA MEMORIA (MENDOZA, ARGENTINA). Avá [online]. 2020, n.37, pp.243-268. Epub July 23, 2020. ISSN 1851-1694.
This article examines the processes of patrimonialization that occurred in the south of Mendoza and the standpoints of rural families and indigenous communities in the face of public initiatives that affect their territories of life and their organizational dynamics. This essay ethnographically addresses two cases, both located in the department of Malargüe: on the one hand, the candidacy of the Payunia and Llancanelo volcanic fields as “world heritage.” On the other, the Mapuche proposal for managing a national historical monument as a “memory site” of indigenous peoples. Heritage strategies constitute acts of power within networks of interests imposed on actors immersed in asymmetrical structural relationships. Thus, the experiences analyzed in this article illuminate processes of social struggles over which memories and which identities can be publicly transmitted, revised, or contested.
