Abstract
FRENKEL, Diana. A vision of Ptolemaic Egypt according to the Letter of Aristeas to Philocrates. Circe clás. mod. [online]. 2006, n.10, pp.157-175. ISSN 1851-1724.
The Letter of Aristeas tells about the Greek translation on the Torah made by seventy-two Jewish scholars from Jerusalem at the court of Ptolemy Philadelphus. The author uses regular forms and motives from the Greek literature. The aim of this article is to show how the descriptions (ekphráseis) of Ptolemy´s gifts and the Eleazar´s priestly garments have the purpose to legitimize the life of the Jewish community in Egypt with a beneficent monarch who released the Jews from slavery and initiated the Torah translation into Greek.
Keywords : Ptolomeus Philaldelphus; Eleazar; Ekphrasis; Jewish community; Translation.
