Abstract

FONTANS-ALVAREZ, Exequiel; AGUIRRE-LIGUERA, Natalia  and  FEO CEDIEL, Yennyfer. La producción científica de Uruguay a partir de la Web of Science (WOS). 40 años de ciencia con visibilidad internacional. Inf. cult. soc. [online]. 2023, n.48, pp.179-203. ISSN 1514-8327.  http://dx.doi.org/10.34096/ics.i48.12652.

The scientific production of Uruguay is analyzed diachronically in the period 1980-2019 in order to characterize it in the context of the most productive countries in the region. This is a descriptive and analytical study, where the Red de Indicadores de Ciencia y Tecnología -Iberoamericana e Interamericana- (RICYT), the OECD and the WOS are used as data sources. The results are presented in three blocks. Firstly, Uruguay is located in the regional context through seven macro indicators; In this regard, it can be concluded that, in general, the country performs well in those indicators that are not dependent on relative size. Secondly, 19,679 publications were identified for the 40-year period considered; 60% of the production is concentrated in the last decade, and in the penultimate decade the most cited production. At a global level, Uruguay collaborates more frequently with the region and with Europe, rather than with the US, contrary to what is reported in the literature on Latin American countries. Finally, the thematic specialty of the country’s scientific production was identified: biological sciences and agricultural sciences, which positions Uruguay between the western and bio-environmental models.
