Abstract
Bol. Soc. Argent. Bot. [online]. 2016, vol.51, n.4, pp.665-673. ISSN 1851-2372.
The effects of UV-B radiation on photosynthetic (total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) and protective (UV-B absorbing compounds) pigments, and soluble sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) in five quinoa varieties from different geographic origin are described. In general, it was demonstrated that varieties react by displaying different strategies to protect themselves against UV-B radiation. These strategies can be either morphological, physiological and/or biochemical type. A common response observed in the five varieties was the increase of UV-B absorbing compound content, which can be assumed as a protection, as a "chemical shield" to protect photosynthetic apparatus against the excess of energy that came from the radiation applied on plants.
