Abstract

GUERRERO, Elián L.. Historical and current geographic distribution and conservation status of the Pampean lupine Lupinus aureon/tens (Fabaceae). Bol. Soc. Argent. Bot. [online]. 2023, vol.58, n.2, pp.6-6.  Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 1851-2372.  http://dx.doi.org/10.31055/1851.2372.v58.n2.37389.

Background and aims: Lupinus aureonitens is an endemic species of the Argentine Pampas, rare with isolated populations. Its geographic distribution is not well known, especially the location of type localities, which determines the establishment of conservation status. The objective of this work is to analyze and update the geographic distribution of the Pampas lupine by mean of historical and current sources, identify the human activities that affect it, and discuss categories of threat.

M&M: Occurrence sites were compiled and analyzed from herbarium materials, historical and current bibliography, databases, and field trips. The location of the type localities was studied using old maps. Threats to the conservation of the species were listed.

Results: Its presence is confirmed and updated in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe and La Pampa political provinces, in sandy or rocky soils of the Pampa Interior and Pampa Austral vegetation units.

Conclusions: The environments in which the species is recorded are relictual landforms. The main threat to the conservation of the species is habitat fragmentation or habitat loss. With the current data it is not prudent to apply the evaluation criteria according to IUCN. The proposal to consider the species as Least Concern should be rejected, and it should be included in the Data Deficient category. For now, it is necessary to accompany future studies with in situ and ex situ conservation measures.

Keywords : Biodiversity conservation; habitat loss; Pampa; temperate grasslands; threatened species.
