Abstract

COSTILLA, Diego D. et al. Botanical description of TUC 95-37 sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) varieties and their inscription in the Registro Nacional de Propiedad de Cultivares of Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2018, vol.95, n.2, pp.41-44. ISSN 1851-3018.

This work aims to evaluate DHE (distinctness, uniformity and stability) of TUC 95-37, one of the first varieties produced by the Sugarcane Breeding Program of Estación Experimental Agoindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC) that were listed in the Registro Nacional de Propiedad de Cultivares of Argentina. Registering varieties in Registro Nacional de Propiedad de Cultivares serves the purpose of protecting creators and discoverers' property rights over new plant varieties. The inclusion in this catalog also implies the registration of varieties in the Registro Nacional de Cultivares, which enables their marketing. Both registers are kept by the Instituto Nacional de Semillas (INASE), an organization that sets standards for the registration of varieties in the Catálogo Nacional de Cultivares. One the requirements for registering varieties is the evaluation of DHE, according to guidelines set by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. This DHE evaluation determines the distinctive characteristics of each variety, by assessing 54 qualitative and quantitative botanical characters in plants from 10 to 12 months of development in a first crop cycle ("plant cane").

Keywords : variety registration; botanical description; sugarcane.
