Abstract

DIAZ, Jorge V. et al. Characterization of sugarcane cultivars according to energy components (Tucumán, Argentina). Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2020, vol.97, n.2, pp.31-34. ISSN 1851-3018.

Bagasse (stalk fiber) and agricultural harvest residue (AHR) obtained from sugarcane are considered energy sources that can contribute to reduce the use of non-renewable fuels. The purpose of this work was to characterize the main sugarcane cultivars grown in Tucumán according to the yield performance of fiber and AHR and their energetic quality components to be used as fuel in boilers steam. Three cultivars of sugar cane (TUC 95-10, TUCCP 77-42 and LCP 85-384) were evaluated in a trial implanted according to a design in complete blocks with three repetitions. Samples of 15 stalks with tops and leaves were taken from each plot to determine fiber content of the stalks (%) and the AHR proportion (%) in order to estimate the tonnes per hectare of AHR (TAHR) and fiber (TFH). Energy parameters that determine the AHR quality were analyzed separately for tops and leaves. These parameters were: ash (As%), fixed carbon (FC%), volatile solids (VS%) and higher calorific value (HCV). For TAHR and TFH, there were no significant differences between cultivars. However, TUC 95-10 showed higher values. Regarding energy parameters of AHR, statistically significant differences were recorded in the tops of the varieties studied in As%, VS% and FC%. The results of this study show the importance of characterizing sugarcane genotypes regarding different traits in a current context where sugarcane is considered as an energy crop..

Keywords : Agricultural harvest residue; bagasse; cultivars; calorific value; cogeneration.
