The aim of this work is to characterize the diversity of the tree stratum in significant areas of the semiarid Chaco. We studied 19 sites, selected according to homogeneous areas. Were surveyed an area of 5 hectares, where they proceeded to conduct an inventory of vegetation and sampling. The sample size is 500 m2, with plots of 4m x 25m. Richness and diversity were calculated using the Shannon-Weaver index. Woody vegetation, succulent and palms were inventoried. The diversity of forest biotypes as represented by 28.6% trees, 48.3% shrubs, 21.76% succulents and 1.3% palms. The trees constitute 41% of the present woody vegetation. The species richness ranged between 11 and 31 according to the work area. The most abundant species are: Schinopsis lorentzii, Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Ziziphus mistol and Prosopis ruscifolia. The total (ST) and tree (SA) richness are highly correlated. This study lays groundwork for further research on representation of woody trees in the study of forest diversity.
